In 1958, Carlos Fuente Sr. purchased A. Fuente & Co. from his father for one dollar. Carlos was ambitious and tried to spread the name of Fuente throughout the country. However, more problems followed. After the Cuban embargo was implemented, the company's main tobacco was restricted. Carlos is faced with a serious question: where does he get his tobacco from now? Carlos would experiment with different blends using tobaccos from around the world. Puerto Rico, Colombia, and even some US-grown leaves fell short of his expectations. With rising labor costs in the US, it is decided to move the entire Fuente operation to Nicaragua. In the 1970s, Carlos opened his own factory in Estelí, one of today's main cigar-producing areas.
